The Beginning of a World-Wide Ministry

I knew by this time that God was ready for me to take the message of his healing power to my generation. I resigned the pastorate in Enid and moved to Tulsa.

I chose Tulsa because it is centrally located in the United States, because of its excellent travel facilities and also because, as a native Oklahoman, I wanted to set up my headquarters in my home state. I think Tulsa is the most beautiful city I have ever seen. It is a wonderful place to live.

Our main difficulty was that I had very little money with which to locate in Tulsa. Evelyn and I searched for a house to lease, but none was to be found, within our ability to handle.

Oscar Moore, the man who had married us and who had been called by the Enid church to take my place, lived in Tulsa at this time. Upon his invitation, we stayed overnight in his home and he tried to help us secure a place to live. The following day he told us that he had sold his house to a man who was coming that evening at six o’clock to close the deal. Suddenly, I had the feeling that this was our house. Then I thought how absurd this was since he had already sold it.

In a few minutes I went into the bedroom to pray, but it seemed that I was unable to pray through on this problem. I told Oscar that I wanted to drive through a certain section of the city again and that I would be back soon. A few minutes later I parked my car near one of the city parks and sat there trying to work things out in my mind. Things now were growing serious. I had given up the Enid pastorate with its security for my family and launched upon a ministry that had many unknown quantities. The amount of money I had was very small—$25 to be exact. Still, I felt each step I had taken had been ordered by the Lord.

As I sat there behind the steering wheel, things looked pretty dark. I felt stranded. There was no human source to which I could turn for help. With an almost uncontrollable urge to cry out to God, I bowed my head over the steering wheel and told him of the predicament I was in. I told him of the needs of my family and of his call upon my life and that if I were to begin in this ministry, I must have help immediately.

When I had prayed myself out, I became quiet before God. It was then that I felt the Holy Spirit come upon me. The words of an old church hymn, one I had known since early childhood, came into my mind:

O the joy of sins forgiv’n!

O the bliss the blood-washed know!

O the peace akin to Heav'n,

Where the healing waters flow!
