Dr. Midkhat Ibraev was one of the principal designers of the MAK-1M system. Though he had worked on the ship when it was being used to spy on the West, he had somehow left Russia to reside in Vancouver, Canada. Sound Ocean Systems hired him especially for the expedition. Officially an outsider, he was well known to the Russian crew and with his good command of English became a bridge to the American team. Known as “Mika,” he roomed with videographer Dal Neitzel and worked closely with Dave and Tom.

Other than Mika, no one in the crew spoke much English. None of the Americans spoke Russian, and none managed to pick up more than a few words, chief among them spasibo (thank you) and “vodka.” Yet Tom had to communicate a cruise plan, and Dave had to figure out how to transfer the sonar and navigation data to his computer. “There was a lot of pantomime and pointing and grunting that went on. We had to work out an awful lot of stuff,” said Dave. “You would say the same words over louder and louder. It was kind of funny!” One language bridge was accidentally discovered by the third member of the Meridian team, our young marketing director, Jeff Burns. A recent hire charged with trying to expand our company’s nascent commercial business, Jeff had no direct experience with marine work or operations at sea. As owner of the company, I felt this expedition would be a great opportunity for Jeff to get some firsthand exposure to our organization, activities, and products. Jeff had never been on a ship before. He recalled the day he learned of the assignment in a 2015 interview:

I remember Dave [Jourdan] called me into his office, sitting me down and saying, “You’ll be a long way from home and you have to be very careful. It’s like living in a factory for an extended period of time, for thirty days you never leave the factory.” What’s going on is all this work activity. So anyway, he was coaching me to be alert and be careful.
