Chapter Twelve

Thomas

It took Kali and I less than ten minutes to break the server's security. He was a damned good hacker in his own right, and I was thoroughly impressed. Technically he was a communications specialist, but I thought he'd missed his calling. He would've been a wonderful asset in intelligence and information technology.

The second layer of security, once we were in, was a set of instructions on how to read and access the files we needed. They appeared to be written in hieroglyphics, but I quickly realized that wasn't the case. Sure, the ancient Egyptian writing was there, but it was a cipher. Even after I did the translation, we'd have to figure out the code.

These terrorists were far more sophisticated than the Army had anticipated. It was then that I found out why Kali stayed in communications. He helped me break the cipher once I was done with translations. I sat in awe and watched his mind work in the most beautiful dance. If he wasn't a genius, he had to be damn close. Kali was more than just an Alpha. I was sure he was more like some sort of super Alpha.

His fingers flew across the keyboard as he arranged and rearranged the possible codes. Kali's laser-like focus was intense. He'd call out possible combinations, and I'd work them. We were a good team, and for the first time, I felt a rush of enthusiasm for our mission. We were going to succeed.

Once the code was broken and I downloaded the files, gunfire erupted outside. "Fuck," Kali growled.

The shots were in the distance, but some of them were hitting the outside wall of the warehouse. I pulled out my gun and started for the door. All of the fear I'd been feeling melted away, and I knew right then that I was no coward.

"No," Kali growled at me. "Get down and stay down."

"I can't do that. I can't let you die for me," I said and tried to push past him.

"Thomas, listen to me. You cannot die. Not because of whatever is going on between us, but because there are potentially thousands of people counting on you to solve this thing. Stay here."

"We've got what we need and you can finish the rest. I won't let down my Squad."

Kali weighed my words in his mind for a few minutes. "Fine, but stay behind me. I can't finish it on my own. I need you."

The way he said “I need you” carried far more weight than just his need for my expertise. I did as he asked and stayed behind him, though.

"Get him back inside," Captain Mayfield barked as soon as I stepped out into the courtyard. "Carter, if you want to shoot, you shoot through a window."

"You heard the Captain," Kali said with a relieved smile.

While Rory, Captain Mayfield, and Kali set up their positions in the courtyard, Aden climbed to the roof to provide sniper fire. I found a window inside that allowed me line of sight with the approaching terrorists.
