CHAPTER 14
ASHLEY
âItâs starting to look as though you two might be here for a while,â Donna said with a cheerful grin as she got them their coffees the following day.
Unlike the last time theyâd come to the bakery, when Caleb had seemed barely present, today he was at the counter alongside Ashley, actually taking the trouble to interact with Donna. He stuffed a tip in the tip jar, surprising Ashley â she would never have pegged him as someone who carried cash. âItâs all right,â he said. âI was eager to get back home, but itâs kind of nice to be âstuckâ here â forced to take a vacation.â
âOoh, I know just what you mean,â Donna agreed, handing him his cup. âAbout five years back, I was visiting San Juan with my husband, and our flight out was cancelled. We couldnât get on another one for three days! It was a mess, but in the end we decided the best thing to do would be to accept the facts and take that time to enjoy the city. They ended up being the best three days of our trip! We went hiking in the rainforest, which we hadnât even planned on doing, and it was spectacular.â
âThat sounds great,â Ashley said. âIâve always dreamed of going to the rainforest.â
âI never knew that,â Caleb said, looking at her.
Ashley felt the burst of surprise that was starting, paradoxically, to feel familiar. It was no surprise that there were things she and Caleb didnât know about one another, of course, but it did take her a bit by surprise each time she came to the realization that he cared about those things. He was looking at her now as if her interest in the rainforest was something that actually mattered to him â something he might have wanted to learn more about. There was no reason he should want to know about his assistantâs hobbies and travel interests.
But then, there was also no reason she ought to want to learn as much more as she had been lately about her boss.
She didnât just appreciate him telling her about the struggles of his past for the context it gave her. She was also, very simply, glad to know. It helped her feel closer to him â and it didnât make sense that she wanted that with him.
He was her boss. She was planning on leaving soon, maybe. She shouldnât be feeling this way.
She shouldnât be looking at Donna and wondering whether the baker could tell that she was feeling romantic feelings toward the man standing next to her.
She certainly shouldnât have been hoping Donna could see it. Who was that going to help?
âI donât have any of my pictures from our trip, or I would happily show them to you,â Donna said. âTheyâre all at my house. Say, the two of you would be more than welcome to come around tonight. Clark and I usually play board games on Friday evenings.â
âBoard games?â Caleb repeated.
Ashley looked at him, checking for disdain or disinterest, but that wasnât what she saw.
