Setting Priorities

Reason, in harness with emotion, also has the role of setting priorities. We may want many things to happen, but they usually cannot do so at once. Some outcomes are time sensitive and are settled by default in the onrush of events when we remain passive too long. This means that in some cases, especially emergencies, any decision-making process must be brief, lest desired outcomes be made moot. The estimate of our own capabilities mentioned above plays a role in determining priorities, as do other elements comprising a situation which render an outcome more or less probable. Decision science and experience warn us of many traps which typically ensnare humans. Finally, the import of any outcome for our worlds, those sum totals of value as we can best visualize them, is often the deciding factor in setting priorities. However, I will claim in chapter VI that “dispositions” and “motivating factors” cannot be quantified, which is one reason that the ultimate decision on priorities is free. Additionally, aspects of “moral triage” related to setting priorities will be detailed further in chapter VII.
