Chapter Twenty-Four

I returned Vanity’s textbook letting her know I left her something inside of it. She was curious as I walked away. Vanity never spoke on the note. I wasn’t sure she even read it, but since our study session, she talked more.

Weeks passed before I heard a rock hit my bedroom window. I thought my mind was playing tricks on me initially, but the longer I laid in bed, the more frequent the sound became. Pulling the curtain back, Vanity was peering up at my window.

She read the note.

Signaling her to meet me at the front, I jogged downstairs and opened the door. Vanity was about to explain, but my finger rushed to my lips, requesting silence. I pointed upstairs, and she hesitated.

“Are you going or what?” I whispered, and she quickly scurried upstairs with me trailing behind her. Nick’s bedroom was in the back of the house near the kitchen, so I was worried, but she was. I guided Vanity to my bedroom and noticed her eyes grow wide, watching me lock the door.

“I don’t want my dad or his girl to walk in,” I explained, and though she nodded, my explanation didn’t calm the worry creasing her brows.

I wanted Vanity to know she was safe. I wouldn’t do shit to her, but words weren’t enough. She needed action, and I could provide only so much in one night.

“Thank you,” she whispered.

“What happened?”

“She told me to get out,” her voice was flat, but her eyes hadn’t left the lock on the door.

“Why?”

“It doesn’t matter. I would’ve gone to Symone’s, but she’s out with Bijon,” Vanity clarified as if she owed me an explanation. I was specific in the invitation I left behind in her book. If you need me, you have somewhere to go.

“I was the second choice Van Van. Damn, you really don’t fuck with me,” I joked in hopes of lightening the mood.

“Stop calling me that,” she demanded, sitting on the bed. Vanity fumbled with the only thing she had brought - an old pink journal with a zipper for privacy. Before I could reply, there was a knock on the door as the handle jingled.

“Royal.” Nick’s voice made Vanity clamp her jaw tight, staring at me in fear.

“What?” I snapped my fingers, motioning her toward me. Shockingly, she followed my command.

“Open the door,” Nick demanded.

Positioning Vanity behind it, I snatched the door open. “Wassup?”

“Who was at the door?” he asked, surveying the background of my room.

“Nobody.”

“Then why did you open it?”

“I thought I didn’t have to explain anything to you?” Nick kissed his teeth, irritated with my response, still surveying my room. There was nothing to see because Vanity was behind the door, out of view.

“This is still my house. Don’t forget it,” Nick warned.

“Trust me, I can’t,” I went to shut the door, but his foot caused it to bounce back. Thankfully I had good reflexes and caught it before it smacked Vanity in the face.

Nick headed downstairs, and I locked the door again. Vanity didn’t move, initially staring at me with hiked brows.
