CHAPTER 11

Through

Nick’s Eyes

Let your smile change the world,

but do not let the world change your smile.

– UNKNOWN

Sunday, June 14, 1:00 a.m.

Jacky Jack. I watched him knock over the picture frame in the hallway and wait for it to crash. Even though I had just turned off the kitchen light, I could see the relief on his face when he picked up the frame and it was still in one piece. Whew! I was relieved for him too.

“Come on, guys,” I said to the two friends who decided to hang out at our place that night.

“We’re sleeping down here.”

As I started down the steps to the basement, I heard Jack walk up the stairs, pause for a moment in his room, and walk down the hallway. He must be taking a shower. I was too tired for that, but I knew his routine better than anyone else. As close as we were, we never shared a room. It was always Jack and Justin sharing a room. But my room was right across from the bathroom, and I knew that a nighttime shower was his thing.

One of my buddies took the floor, and the other buddy and I crashed on the L-shaped sofa with our feet almost touching in the corner. We were all so tired; we barely talked as we drifted off to sleep. I might have fallen asleep faster, except for that sick feeling in my stomach. I knew everything would be all right as soon as I got some sleep. As I lay there, drifting off to sleep, I thought of Jack. I could not believe my little bro was finished with high school already. His senior year went so fast.

And what a year it was; I am so proud of that kid. The way he stepped up as hockey team captain and led the team to the state championship; the way he took over my guidance office intern role and made it his own. While I loved giving new students a tour of our high school, Jack did not think twice about answering the annoying office phones or handling difficult questions from disgruntled parents and students.

Although he wasn’t afraid of leading and taking responsibility, he also liked to have fun and goof off. He was a daredevil, always taking our tricks, challenges and dares to the next level. Take, for instance, the time Mom and Dad left us with Grandma at the lake house. Mom had gone back to work full-time that year, so Grandma came up to the house to stay with us during the day while Mom and Dad were at work. They said, “No dirt bikes while we’re gone.” And as soon as they left, Jack convinced me there was no harm in taking a quick little ride while Grandma was busy in the kitchen. We would be out and back before anyone knew we were gone, and before Mom and Dad would get home.

Sitting proud on his dirt bike that afternoon, Jack took the long and high approach to speed bumps on the track, but luck was not in his favor that day.
