Chapter Ten

Bloody, bloody hell.

Edward came awake from the light doze he’d fallen into. A blurry-eyed glance at the carriage-style clock on the bedside table showed it was just past midnight. He hadn’t meant to couple with Juliet; it had merely happened in the attempt to comfort and distract her. Yet he’d been motivated by anger from Lord Breckenridge’s audacity as well as jealousy, for the thought of her in another man’s company was unfathomable.

This was a very bad idea indeed.

Not that he could do much about it now. He’d bedded her and it had been some of the best coupling he’d had, but it didn’t mean anything. Letting a woman close, inviting her to delve further into his life was impossible. This was a one-off experience; it had to be, for her protection as well as his. He was a man broken by his circumstances and certainly wasn’t worthy of anything good or true.

Since both men had been recently married during the summer, perhaps they could give him sage advice on what the hell he should do about the surprising problem of Juliet. Where he’d only wished to protect her, clear her name, things had become suddenly more complicated, all because of that undeniable connection between them that had pulled him under, made him take leave of his senses until he’d claimed her body.

After removing and disposing of the used sheath, Edward did the necessary in the chamber pot then cleaned himself with a hand towel and a cake of finely milled French soap at the washstand. As he caught his reflection in the cheval glass nearby, he turned so some of the scars on his back were visible. Familiar memories rose, and he remembered every bit of pain involved in such, but should he share that with the woman sleeping peacefully in the bed?

Did he want to talk about a few portions of his past and thereby relive those times in his life? If he’d asked himself that same question a week ago, even two weeks prior, the answer would have been a definitive no. Now? With the advent of Juliet and her bright curiosity, her unique way of looking at
