Chapter Ten
May 21, 1816
Bollinger House
Portman Square
London, England
Leopold shoved a hand through his hair that his valet had just finished dressing. With a murmured apology to that man when he huffed, he meekly submitted to the valetâs care once more, and finally stepped away with a sigh.
What do I do about the problem of Rachel?
âYou are distracted this afternoon, Your Lordship.â
âIndeed. And you are quite astute, Medford,â he growled at the valet, then promptly apologized. âThat wasnât well done of me, but yes. Much weighs upon my mind.â
âDoes it have anything to do with that scandalous widow who visited this house a handful of days ago?â the other man asked as he assisted Leo in donning a jacket of sapphire superfine.
âActually, it does.â His mouth curved with a grin when he remembered that incident. Damn, but Rachel was determined and fearless at times. âShe is nothing as I expected her to be.â
âMost women are not, if you donât mind me saying.â
Leopold chuckled, and his mood lifted. âI donât mind at all.â He clapped the other manâs shoulder. âWhat would you do?â
âThat largely depends on what your ultimate goal regarding her is, Your Lordship.â
âTrue.â He rubbed a hand along the side of his freshly shaved face. âThe lady wishes for marriage.â
âAnd you? I have been in your service for many years, and in that time, you havenât acted as if that was a goal you wanted to meet.â The valet eyed him askance. âOr even move toward.â
Heat crept up the back of his neck. âI am well aware of that. Howeverâ¦â
âYes?â One of Medfordâs dark eyebrows lifted in inquiry.
âI might change my mind if I spend too much time in that certain widowâs company.â There was no shame in the admission for his world had been in a wash of confusion for the past two days since heâd claimed Rachelâs body two days ago in that library.
Since she had more or less demanded that he lay with her.
The valetâs lower jaw dropped. Surprise reflected in his eyes. âShe must have made an impression upon you if itâs come to this.â
âPerhaps it has. I must ponder upon it more.â He winked at the valet and then left his suite. As his stomach rumbled, he realized he hadnât eaten regularly over the past two days, for his thoughts had revolved around Rachel and what he would do about his relationship with her. By the time he reached the drawing room where his sister was taking tea, he was completely famished. âGood afternoon, Theresa.â He tugged on the velvet bell pull, for he meant to have a refresh of the tea tray. Knowing his sibling, she would have already decimated most of the edibles.
She glanced up from the book of poetry she held in one hand. In the other, she had a teacup. Her legs were crossed in a Turkish fashion with her pink skirting helter skelter around themâthe perfect picture of scandal waiting to happen. âAh, St. Vincent. How nice of you to join me.
