Chapter Ten

May 21, 1816

Bollinger House

Portman Square

London, England

Leopold shoved a hand through his hair that his valet had just finished dressing. With a murmured apology to that man when he huffed, he meekly submitted to the valet’s care once more, and finally stepped away with a sigh.

What do I do about the problem of Rachel?

“You are distracted this afternoon, Your Lordship.”

“Indeed. And you are quite astute, Medford,” he growled at the valet, then promptly apologized. “That wasn’t well done of me, but yes. Much weighs upon my mind.”

“Does it have anything to do with that scandalous widow who visited this house a handful of days ago?” the other man asked as he assisted Leo in donning a jacket of sapphire superfine.

“Actually, it does.” His mouth curved with a grin when he remembered that incident. Damn, but Rachel was determined and fearless at times. “She is nothing as I expected her to be.”

“Most women are not, if you don’t mind me saying.”

Leopold chuckled, and his mood lifted. “I don’t mind at all.” He clapped the other man’s shoulder. “What would you do?”

“That largely depends on what your ultimate goal regarding her is, Your Lordship.”

“True.” He rubbed a hand along the side of his freshly shaved face. “The lady wishes for marriage.”

“And you? I have been in your service for many years, and in that time, you haven’t acted as if that was a goal you wanted to meet.” The valet eyed him askance. “Or even move toward.”

Heat crept up the back of his neck. “I am well aware of that. However…”

“Yes?” One of Medford’s dark eyebrows lifted in inquiry.

“I might change my mind if I spend too much time in that certain widow’s company.” There was no shame in the admission for his world had been in a wash of confusion for the past two days since he’d claimed Rachel’s body two days ago in that library.

Since she had more or less demanded that he lay with her.

The valet’s lower jaw dropped. Surprise reflected in his eyes. “She must have made an impression upon you if it’s come to this.”

“Perhaps it has. I must ponder upon it more.” He winked at the valet and then left his suite. As his stomach rumbled, he realized he hadn’t eaten regularly over the past two days, for his thoughts had revolved around Rachel and what he would do about his relationship with her. By the time he reached the drawing room where his sister was taking tea, he was completely famished. “Good afternoon, Theresa.” He tugged on the velvet bell pull, for he meant to have a refresh of the tea tray. Knowing his sibling, she would have already decimated most of the edibles.

She glanced up from the book of poetry she held in one hand. In the other, she had a teacup. Her legs were crossed in a Turkish fashion with her pink skirting helter skelter around them—the perfect picture of scandal waiting to happen. “Ah, St. Vincent. How nice of you to join me.
