Chapter TEN

“NO, THAT’S okay. I appreciate you taking my call. I’ll talk to you soon.”

Avery tossed his phone on the bed and scowled at it. He’d been reaching out to everyone he knew in economics departments around the country, and he’d yet to find an opening. Most schools already had a candidate in mind to fill open positions before they were even listed, so it was a game of who you knew and how good your network was. Unfortunately, his US network was a damn sight weaker than his European one. He’d done his undergraduate and masters at Northwestern, and most of the professors he’d had during his tenure there had retired. He knew plenty of professors from the lecture and publishing circuit, but they’d all been coming up dry on leads on positions that might open up.

It didn’t help that the term was almost over. Universities in the US were in session later into the spring than their European counterparts, but professors who were retiring or moving on after the term would have already announced that months ago. Once again, his impulsiveness was biting him in the arse.

Paul walked in before Avery could get too deep into the self-loathing routine he’d settled into over the last two days.

“You look like you belong on the cover of a ski magazine,” Avery said, taking a moment to admire the picture Paul made standing in the doorway in his ski suit, cheeks rosy not from the snow but from being overheated on the drive back. The weather was crazy here.

“It was gorgeous out there this morning. You should have come.”

They’d fallen into an easy routine. This late in the season the snow was fickle, so most of the runs had already closed. Mount Rose was the best bet for good snow this time of year, since it was the highest elevation in Tahoe. It was also a good half-hour drive from their resort. Since Avery didn’t ski, he stayed back while the rest of the group made the trek. Everyone seemed to prefer early morning skis before the sun heated the runs too much, which worked in his favor. Otherwise he’d have to choose between being alone all day in the cabin or renting equipment and learning to ski.

“The views from here are every bit as gorgeous, but they don’t involve me falling on my ass,” Avery said, leering at Paul as he peeled his form-fitting snowsuit off.

“We wouldn’t want to risk the ass.” Paul knelt on the bed where Avery was sitting and gave him a lazy, filthy kiss before standing back up to finish stripping out of his gear. “We’re going to grab lunch in town before the brewery tour. Are you at a stopping point?”

Paul had been great about giving him space to finish his grading and work on his job search. Almost too great. No matter how Avery tried to connect, Paul remained distant. The sex was amazing and the flirting was fun, but Paul was careful to keep everything superficial.
