Chapter Thirteen

The day had gone a lot better than I had hoped. We'd gotten all the paperwork signed, including the pre-nuptial agreement Ryan insisted on, and my attorney was going to file them with the courts by the end of the day.

We had also picked out an engagement ring for Ryan to wear plus wedding bands to exchange when we got married, and applied for our marriage license. We'd topped off the day by going out to dinner with Gianni.

With him being away at medical school, I hadn't had the chance to spend a lot of time with my baby brother over the last couple of years. He came home for most of the major holidays, but missed a lot of little ones.

I didn't realize how much I had missed him until we all sat down to eat and started talking. Frank and I had always been protective of Gianni. While he looked a lot like us, his desire to be a medical doctor had always been what drove him. He was a geek, plain and simple.

I still loved him, geekdom and all.

I was a little disappointed that Ryan and I couldn't get married right now. We had to wait the three day waiting period before we could say "I do". Three days was a long time when you were holding your breath and waiting for someone to change their minds.

I was positive that Ryan was going to wake up at any moment and realize what he had agreed to and run for the hills. I'd lose him and my son in one fell swoop.

I'd be devastated.

I didn't say anything as I drove us back to the condo. If Ryan didn't protest, I wasn't going to do anything to bring it to his attention. I wanted him and Arty there with me.

When we pulled into the underground parking garage, Ryan rolled his head on the seat and smiled at me.

"Tired?" I asked.

Ryan nodded. "It's been an eventful day."

"I've heard a rumor that the master bathtub is perfect for soaking in. Why don't I get Arty ready for bed while you check it out?"

Amusement laced Ryan's voice when he asked, "A rumor, huh?"

I grinned. "It's what I heard."

"I just might have to check that out."

I nodded toward the sleeping kid in the backseat. "I'll get him all tucked in and then bring you a glass of wine."

"That would be really nice." Ryan's brow flickered for a moment. "Are you sure you don't mind? Arty's not always the easiest to get down, especially when he's overly tired."

"I have to learn some time." I shrugged as if it was no big deal, but frankly, I was terrified.

I'd watched Ryan do it, but my exposure to small children could be counted on one hand. If I messed this up, Ryan was gone for sure. He was all about protecting Arty, while I was all about protecting the both of them.

Once I parked and turned off the car, I climbed out and stepped over to the backseat.
