CHAPTER FIFTEEN

KAREEM "REEM" BANKS

I was back in the streets. Driving to Savannah’s house, I tried to think of something I could say to her. I gave up on trying to fix shit between us. It’d been a while since I talked to Vannah. I thought she changed her number on me. Regardless of what we had going on, I still wanted to be a part of my baby girl’s life.

I knew it might seem like I was a fuck nigga, but I was still a decent man. I went to visit my lil’ daughter in the hospital last week. They said she was doing good, and they wanted to discharge her today. Imagine my face when they told me Vannah hadn't even named my baby. And that wasn’t even the worst part. They hadn’t heard from or seen her since she left the hospital. She wouldn’t even answer the phone. They thought no one was coming to get her. I was heated. I didn’t wanna say shit to Vannah, because everything was still fresh with Maya. I just figured she needed time.

Pulling into Vannah’s driveway, she was closing the trunk to the car. I was glad I caught her in time to pick up the baby.

“You ’bout to go and pick up our daughter?” I asked.

“No! And why are you at my house?”

“What you mean why am I here? The hospital said our daughter will be discharged today. They said you haven’t been up there to see her, and you still haven’t named her!”

“Tuh! They called you? Well, they should’ve got the message when I stopped answering the phone… I’m not keeping the baby, Reem. They can do whatever they want, but I’ve had too much loss.”

Running up in her face, I grabbed her by the neck. “You ain’t leaving my fucking baby in that hospital!” I growled.

“Humph! Nigga, fuck you! Don’t act like you give a damn about me and my kids when you were still with that bitch! Yeah, she messaged me!”

“So you’re willing to leave our daughter in the hospital because I was cheating? Make it make sense, Vannah!”

“I’m done! Fuck you! I don’t want any ties to you at all! If you want her, then you go and get her!”

And that was what I did. I hopped right back inside the red Cadillac Geo let me borrow. I’d been back and forth from my cousin’s house in Augusta. Those two-hour drives gave me enough time to think. Everything had been weighing heavy on me. I realized I had to get my shit together. I was responsible for everything that was happening. I got that muthafucking life wakeup call that the old people always talked about. I put all my priorities in line, starting with myself first. The first thing I did was give up lean. I’d been craving a cup for the past five days, but I’d been staying headstrong.

Like I said, I knew shit with me and Savannah was over. After what happened to Maya, there wasn't any coming back.
