Chapter Ten

Shit. Shit.

Shit!

Harcourt raked a hand from his hair while Leah went into the adjoining dressing room. She’d slipped from his lap moments before to presumably clean herself and put her gown back in respectable order. But his mind alternated between spinning out of control and freezing from what had just happened.

He’d coupled with his best friend’s sister, the woman he was supposed to look after, the sister who still grieved her dead brother because of him, the partner he’d promised to help regain the one thing of value she had as an inheritance. To say nothing of betraying her brother’s memory by using her in the basest of ways.

Additionally, he’d taken her innocence when he was to wed another in four days.

Four days!

His life would change, and he’d be leg-shackled to a woman who had absolutely no enthusiasm for intercourse like Leah had shown. For the first time of his life, he would belong to a woman to whom he held no love and who didn’t love him. A woman who would hardly let him bed her, let alone wished to spend any sort of quality time with him.

Hadn’t Sarah said her time tonight had previously been spoken for so she couldn’t attend the ball with him?

The urge to retch steadily climbed his throat, but he staved it off with a few hard swallows. By all rights, he’d ruined Leah, should marry her, but he couldn’t, and she was relegated to the status of a mistress when she deserved so much better. From him. From everyone. From life in general.

What the hell was he to do now?

“I can almost hear you thinking, Edenthorpe.”

He jerked at the sound of her voice as she returned to the room. “Bloody hell.” Scrambling up from the chair, Harcourt quickly set his trousers to rights and then his shirt, but with each movement, the glance of her fingers over his skin, the touch of her hand on his member haunted him and renewed the awareness of her. “We need to remove to the ball, for now we’re hopelessly late.”

That wasn’t what he wanted to say at all!

“We shall arrive in due course.” She took up the white, fur-lined cloak and after bringing it to her nose—to breathe in his scent? —she fastened it about her shoulders. “Though, if given the chance, I would linger here. With you.”

Oh, God.

Though he breathed a tad easier now that her charms were properly covered with the cloak, knowing she wished to spend more time with him set him at sixes and sevens all over again. “Uh, that isn’t a good idea.” After retrieving the abandoned waistcoat, he struggled into it.

“Spoilsport.” She came close, stood behind him and set to work fitting the vest to him. As she manipulated the ties, heat crept up his back, for one round of intercourse had simply not been enough to evict her from his blood. “Let me assist with your jacket in lieu of a valet.”

“I would appreciate it.” In silence, he watched while she plucked the garment from the floor.
