Chapter Nine

Maggie had no idea where Elyne conjured up armor that actually fit her. She had disappeared from Finn’s tent and moments later returned with the full gear. It took some doing to get Maggie into the armor, but Elyne seemed to know all about it. From the greaves to the bracers, to the gauntlets to the breastplate. Maggie was all suited up and ready to go.

It was amazing, really.

“Does this armor make my butt look big?”

“Very funny.” Elyne scowled, unfazed by Maggie’s humor.

“But…I’m too small and skinny to look like Finn,” Maggie complained, looking at her reflection in the polished steel. She couldn’t quite make out what she looked like other than a foggy blob. She wished she had a real mirror.

“Don’t worry about that. I can cast a glamour over you. No one will ever know.”

“Really? You can do that? I thought only Fae could have a glamour.”

“I can cast a Fae glamour over anyone. Only a Fae will be able to see your true form—and mine—while the glamour is up.”

“Sir Derron will be able to see my true form, then.” Maggie worried about that.

“Aye, but he’s not due in the lists today,” Elyne replied.

“What about Fergus and Geoffrey? Will they be able to see me as I am or as Finn?”

She huffed her annoyance. “We don’t have time for me to explain Fae magic to you.”

“Humor me.” Fergus already knew Maggie was taking Finn’s place. The last thing she needed was for him to know Elyne was of the “fair folk”.

“I can make them immune to the magic. They will see you as you are but everyone else will see you as Finn. Now, come on. Let’s get you to the lists.”

They exited the tent to find Fergus waiting outside, pacing and wringing his hands. “Are ye sure about this, my lady?” he asked. “Sir Finian won’t be very happy when he finds out.”

“He’s not going to find out,” Maggie warned. “Because neither you nor Geoffrey will tell him. Now, tell me what I need to know.”

Grabbing Fergus by the arm, they headed from the pavilion to the lists. She wanted to arrive before the scheduled time so Lord Vile wouldn’t try to disqualify Finn.

“Sit firmly in the saddle, my lady,” Fergus explained patiently. “Make sure you keep your feet in the stirrups and use your knees to cling to the horse. Hold the lance upright in your right hand. Keep it upright until the last possible moment, and then lower it at an angle across the horse’s neck.” He used hand motions to give her a visual.

“Got it. What else?”

“Once you have it lowered, couch it under your right arm, pointing it forward across the tilt barrier. Like this.” The boy paused to pick up a stick and showed her what he meant.

Maggie nodded. “Right hand, point across the tilt barrier. Sounds easy enough. Anything else?”

“Aim for the middle of his chest,” Fergus said. “And brace yourself for the impact by leaning backward slightly. The only
