Chapter Nineteen

Naomi felt icky in this tacky, abandoned building. She could feel the creepy crawlers and Hepatitis C entering her body. She hated it and was confused how her boyfriend could be relaxed inside. Tobey steadily looked for rope while she stood by the front door. “Earlier today, Brady wouldn’t leave the doorway either,” he said.

Typical Brady being lazy and making someone else do all the hard work. Naomi held herself. She couldn’t believe that their friend was dead. Adam was adamant he didn’t do it. What if he was telling the truth? Then that meant another good friend was a killer. She shivered, trying to get that image out of her head.

Someone destroyed their getaway. Naomi had a sickening feeling that it wasn’t some cruel, out of hand, practical joke. The killer wasn’t finished, and he was toying with them. Breaking them down with psychological warfare. Well, it was working on her; she was afraid to die.

The killer was so quiet that he could easily sneak up on people. He was able to kill Marissa without any witnesses; plus, he was able to destroy the Jeeps without anyone noticing. The Quiet Killer or The Silencer. If they all passed away, Naomi could see Hollywood playing it as a horror movie trilogy. Unfortunately, she wouldn’t be around to see if that would be the case.

How could Rae or Brady not hear anything? How could they not feel the Jeeps moving? Unless the killer had operated when no one was around. But how? When? If Naomi wouldn’t get answers soon, she’d go crazy. “If Adam didn’t kill Marissa, then who did?” she asked.

Tobey stopped searching through the red toolbox. He walked in her direction and stood in front of her. He stepped closer in a forward motion, causing Naomi to take a step back. She almost bumped into the wall. Thankfully, she didn’t. Who knew what kind of bacteria was on those walls. She couldn’t afford to get a skin disease or stain her designer clothes.

“Of course Adam did it,” Tobey said.

“What if he didn’t?”

“He did.”

Naomi sighed. “What if he didn’t…maybe Brady did it, like Adam said.” She knew she was grasping at straws, but maybe Adam was right. Brady was sketchy. He could’ve hid the belts before Rae snuck out of the cabin to sleep with him. And just because Tobey had escorted him back, didn’t mean that Brady couldn’t have gone back to the lake after Kenan and Adam left.

Maybe he finally snapped because he was tired of people picking on him. Naomi was the biggest offender of that. She’d have to watch her back around Brady.

“We can’t turn on each other; that’s what Adam wants,” Tobey said calmly. She noticed that her boyfriend didn’t protest that Brady didn’t do it. Goodness gracious, what if she was next on his hit list?

It was hard for her to catch her breath. She grabbed her throat as if choking to death.

He ran his fingers through her hair. The gesture soothed her, so she breathed more slowly.
