Dark.

Silent.

Still.

Perry was staring down, seeing the alley below. A mess. Kujo against the far wall, crying, cursing, twisting and rolling on the ground. Kilo rocking back and forth, holding his ankle, trying to stop the bleeding. Three other Hyenas in a circle, kicking and stomping what looked like a big white bag of trash. Kicking and kicking and swinging the bats. They were laughing hard, slipping in pools of dark blood and broken glass.

Perry climbed higher, up out of the alley. It didn’t matter. It had nothin’ to do with him. He turned away. Ooh, look. A soft glow rising above the tall buildings. He wanted to see. He rose higher, over the tallest buildings, till he could see it clearly. Prob’ly the most beautiful moon ever was rising full out of the harbor. The water shimmered, a slight breeze brushin’ his face. Man, refreshing.

A soft light soaked a sleeping city. He was fresh and happy. Everything was beautiful. He wanted to get closer. He started moving toward the glowing silver disc, gliding weightless, floating on top of the beauty. Or in it, sliding along above the sparkling water. Ahead, feathery clouds were on the horizon. Cotton candy, drifting silent across the face of the moon. Perry was drifting too. Silent, smooth, no hurry. But he did want to see where he was going.
