Elizabeth was frowning as she took her history book from her locker. "I just don't get it," she said to Enid, who was standing beside her. "Regina and Bruce only broke up Saturday. Today's Wednesday. In the space of four days, she suddenly seems like a different person!"
"It happens," Enid said. "Remember, Liz, she's been through a real shock. Whatever she may have suspected about Bruce and Amy, she still didn't know her relationship with Bruce was going to blow up in her face the way it did. You know what happens when people suffer terrible lossâthey go to extremes."
"Well," Elizabeth said, slamming her locker door shut, "you can certainly say that Regina is going to extremes. She's with Justin and his friends every single time I see her!" Her blue-green eyes were filled with concern. "Look, I may end up messing things up again, but I want to let her know that I'm behind her. I'm going to try to find her during study hall to tell her I'm sorry."
"Be careful," Enid advised. "Something tells me she's going to be more than a little touchy. Ken told me that Bruce said she pretends he doesn't exist. She hangs up when he calls her, won't say hello to himâshe's really giving him the silent treatment."
Elizabeth sighed. "I don't really blame her," she confessed. "What Bruce and Amy did to her on Saturday night was unforgivable. And I'm afraid I really owe her an apology for my role in the whole mess. I just want to find her and let her know that's how I feel."
"Look, there she is right now!" Enid exclaimed, pointing as Regina rounded a corner and passed through the main corridor with Justin.
"Wait here," Elizabeth urged her. "I'll just be a second." History book tucked under her arm, she hurried down the hallway after the couple.
"Regina!" she exclaimed when she was within earshot. "Can I talk to you for a second?"
Regina turned, her face completely impassive. "I guess so," she said flatly. "Liz, do you know Justin?"
"Nice to meet you," Elizabeth said.
Justin nodded at her. "You're the one with the twin sister, right?" he said.
Elizabeth nodded, wondering how she was going to be able to get Regina away from Justin long enough to talk to her.
But Regina solved the problem for her. "Justin, I'll meet you after class," she murmured, patting his arm with her hand. "Are we still set for this afternoon?"
"Absolutely," Justin said, squeezing her arm affectionately. "See you later!" And with that he slipped away through the crowded hallway.
"Justin's taking me for a ride on his motorcycle after school," Regina announced. Her voice struck Elizabeth as more than a little defiant, and she remembered Enid's warning about being careful.
"Well, I'm not the best person to talk about motorcycles," Elizabeth said, trying to keep her voice light. Elizabeth had almost been killed some months earlier when her former boyfriend, Todd Wilkins, had taken her for a ride on his motorcycle and they had gotten in a terrible accident.
