If people during a military siege are forced to pay a mina for a sextarius of water, this at first appears to us incredible, and everyone is shocked.[cxxxvi] But then when they reflect on it, they make allowances for the extreme hardship at issue. In other sorts of gross wastage and conspicuous consumption, though, we are not so stricken with wonder: not even when no dire need is involved and no sort of dignity is promoted. The enjoyment of the crowd is engaged only for a short, fleeting time. And this itself is the most trifling thing of all: as soon as the senses of the person are satisfied, the memory of the event dies away.[cxxxvii]
