After our much-needed conversation, I went out on the balcony which housed a fire pit over the beautiful view. Chill’s penthouse sat off the strip, so ahead of us were huge mountains. They looked so beautiful and gave me a sense of serenity I never had in the hood I grew up in. All I ever saw were run-down homes and dope heads walking the streets. My upbringing was why I tried so hard to make it out of the hood. I knew I wanted to become a nurse before making it to high school. My great aunt Vickie was a nurse, and she was the rich auntie who lived in the suburbs far away from us. I used to wish she would let me come live with her instead of being stranded with my mama and no dad. And with the mama I have it’s almost like I didn’t have her either. In and out of jail and still living off of me even from the prison.

When my phone rang from my lap, I rolled my eyes because it was as if I’d talked her up. However, I knew it wasn’t the case because it is 10:00 am back home and that’s when she usually calls.

“Would you like to accept the charges for inmate Sha Johnson?”

“Since when did you get a patio?” She pried in my business. My mama had never been to my place, but we talked on the phone enough that she knew the whole layout. She knew more of my business than anybody else because I didn’t have anybody else to tell with no room to judge like her.

“I’m actually at my man’s house. He lives in Vegas.”

“Okay! He fine? He got money? He got a sister?” She replied and I couldn’t help but laugh at her.

My mama went into the feds and became a full-out stud this last go around.

“Anyway, I’m about to go eat breakfast with my boo. Can you call me back tomorrow?”

“Of course I can. I have some big news for you, and I want to have time to talk about it.”

“News like what?”

“You said you were about to go out, so I’ll just call back tomorrow.”

“I mean I am, but I want to know now. You can’t just tickle the cat like that.” I used one of her old sayings.

“Okay, okay spoiled brat. Your mama is coming home. I got a release date. I get out July 2024.” She replied, and I sat up in my seat.

“For real ma? You getting out?”

“Yes. The parole board granted me release. I’m coming home, baby.”

She made me swallow the big lump in my throat.

“Yay, mama I’m so excited. I can’t wait for you to get out.” I replied, knowing I felt the complete opposite. I didn’t expect my mama to get out for at least another twenty years. I may
