Ike

I walked into Phil’s place without any kind of plan in mind. In fact, I’d pretty much decided not to talk to him for at least a few weeks so we could just take a pregnancy test and know for sure, but then I ended up outside his apartment, waiting for him to let me in.

“Are you okay?” Phil didn’t get too close to me when I stormed into his place and began pacing, but I could tell he wanted to.

I kinda wanted him to too.

But I also needed some space.

I didn’t want to lash out at him because the situation we were in wasn’t his fault. It was my fault. I was wholly and completely to blame for being so damn stupid. How could I fall asleep while still knotted? That had never happened before, and I needed to make sure it never happened in the future.

But Phil definitely wasn’t to blame for my mistake, and yet, I was taking out my fear and frustration on him. I sighed heavily and dropped onto the center of the sofa. “Sorry, I’m being an ass, but this is the last fucking thing I need right now.”

“I know.” Phil gingerly sat on the far end of the sofa, giving me the room I needed to breathe while still being close to me. “I’m sorry. I didn’t know.”

I covered my eyes with the heels of my hands and leaned back on the cushions. “It’s my fault. I fell asleep.”

“Even if there was a leak, which I kinda figured out there was when I got into the shower, the chances of me actually being pregnant are pretty slim?”

I laughed, wondering if he was being serious. “You’ve got to be kidding, right? We have a fucking connection, Phil. I felt it the first moment I saw you. That increases your chances of conception by like a million.”

“Really?” I glanced at him and he looked confused. “I didn’t know that.”

I so didn’t want to be having this conversation. “I didn’t either until I was sued for paternity support by my ex. He was barely a booty call and yet when he got knocked up, he decided to pin the law suit on me.” I stood up and started pacing again, frustrated and uncomfortable by even thinking about that time in my life. “My lawyer specialized in these cases and explained some of the biology to me. Compatibility is almost a bigger factor in conception than fertility. It’s crazy, but when a couple is…I don’t know if bonded is the right term, but when there’s strong chemistry together, the chances of accidental and unexpected pregnancy go up a lot. Like, a whole lot.”

“Shit.” Now Phil looked as pale as I felt. “Then we are screwed.”

I crossed my arms over my chest and stared at him. “So, what do you want to do?”

He didn’t seem to be following my line of thinking at all. “What do you mean? Like, go to the doctor or something?”
