CHAPTER 22
Rory woke up feeling warm and safe and deliciously still tired, thoroughly ready to slip out of bed for a snack and a drink and then climb back in to drowse the day away.
It was the morning after the full moon, and he knew it without any moment of uncertainty, even though he’d never woken up from a moon feeling like this. His mate was curled around him, holding him in strong arms and keeping him warm, and...
Beau was awake already, Rory realized, his own drowsiness melting away. Beau’s hand was low on his belly, fingertips rubbing back and forth in a motion that was gentle but not at all idle.
Rory closed his eyes. He didn’t want to know what it meant, didn’t want to think about that when the morning was so quiet and good, but... who knew what Beau was thinking, after last night? Rory couldn’t hide from him, not anymore. Not if... not now.
“Can you feel it?” Rory asked quietly.
Beau’s lips touched the juncture of his neck and shoulder, and his fingers stilled on Rory’s belly.
“Where—where I’m broken,” Rory said, forcing the words out. He’d told Beau at the beginning, but they had never spoken of it after that. “Can you tell?”
Beau’s breath, when he let it out, was warm and then cool on Rory’s skin. That was why Rory shivered.
Beau took his hand away from Rory’s belly and found a blanket they somehow hadn’t kicked entirely off the bed. He tugged it over both of them. Only when they were covered did he ease away from Rory, gently prodding Rory to turn over and face him.
Rory turned where Beau wanted him, but he couldn’t make himself meet Beau’s eyes. He could feel his husband’s gaze on him, as warm and gentle and steady as Beau’s hands.
“It’s not something I’m trained in,” Beau said softly. “I’m not a midwife, I don’t know the things a midwife would know about what’s normal or abnormal for an omega. Humans are a little different, and... all the differences would be little things, with this. But... nothing felt really obviously broken. To me.”
Rory had to look then, meeting Beau’s eyes. His own felt wide, and he didn’t know what to think of the caution in Beau’s voice, the possibility Beau was implying.
“I don’t know,” Beau repeated gently. “But you’ll need to see a midwife soon anyway. I promised you we’d find one when you were healthy again. By next month, I bet you’ll be feeling even better than you are now, so you won’t want to put that off.”
Rory closed his eyes again. Suppressants. Poison. But on the other hand: no heats. None of that danger, none of the fear, no feeling lost and out of control, at the mercy of his alpha...
No full moon night spent with Beau when he’d be able to do more than fuck once or twice and sleepily lend a hand whenever Beau got worked up again. No chance of finding out whether a heat could be good, if it was with Beau, the way last night had been.
