Fifteen

Out of breath, his body still crackling with desire for her, Nik stared up at the ceiling. “Sasha...why did we wait for so long to do this?”

“We literally waited three days,” she replied. “That’s not very long by most standards.”

“Whose standards are we playing by?” he asked.

“Society?”

“I hate society,” he grumbled.

“Me, too. They ruin everything.” Sasha curled up to him and pressed the palm of her hand to his sternum. “Did I tell you that I love your body?”

He ran a hand down the curve of her side. “Did I tell you that I’m obsessed with yours?”

She laughed and said, “You’re right. We should’ve done this sooner. We should’ve joined the Mile High Club as the plane came crashing down.”

Nik tried to picture it. “That’s a story for our grandchildren.”

Her face clouded and he regretted the joke almost immediately.

“I didn’t mean it,” he said. “It was just a joke.”

“I know that!” she said, brightening all too suddenly.

He cupped her face to reassure her, even as an image sharpened in his mind: children, grandchildren, a lifelong road trip of adventures with this woman. It scared him to death. Sasha would never agree to any of that.

Here he was, back where he’d started. He loved the wild ones, and the wild ones had to run free.

Nik had dismissed his cousin’s concerns the night they’d discussed his personal life over margaritas. He told her she was way off course.

“It’s because of your parents,” Krystal said.

“Not everything is because of our parents,” he said.

“Maybe, but in this case we can draw a straight line to your dad leaving and your mother—”

“Hold on,” he said, interrupting her. “If I follow your logic, my dad was the wild card of my family. He took off and never looked back. Why would I chase after that? My mother was steadfast, steady. I admire her so much. To this day, she’s my hero.”

“Pardon my saying this, but your mom, who happens to be my beloved godmother and aunt, was tired, overworked, a little cranky and always complaining about money—”

“Come on! How can you blame her for that?”

“I don’t blame her,” Krystal said. “Don’t put words in my mouth.”

“Then what?”

“Of course, you admire her strength and appreciate her sacrifices,” Krystal went on. “You’re not a monster. But your dad got to run free. He got to be a supernova, a rock star. That’s the quality that you’re chasing after.”

Nik tried to make sense of her words. Maybe he’d had too much to drink, but he found it too abstract a concept for him to grasp.

“Sorry,” he said. “I don’t see it.”

“You may not be ready to admit it now,” Krystal said. “You’re a smart guy. One day, you’ll figure it out.”

He’d figured it out, all right. Here and now, in Sasha’s bed.

He ran a hand over his face. Sasha pulled it away. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing’s wrong,” he said.

“Why do you look like that?” she asked.

“No reason.”

“Listen, I can take a joke.”

“I know, honey,” he said. “It’s not that. I should get going now.
