Chapter 3 – Steel Yourself

People who say that the world is a dangerous place have never been inside an office. When people get cornered or fail to get what they want, they start to play the game of office politics dirty, acting like sociopaths disregarding morals and ethics. When the game is reduced to this rubbish, and you are determined to stay and weather everything, you need to protect yourself with an iron will. Here are some tips to become a strong-willed player of the game:

Be more confident by honing your skills. Most people who shy away from playing the stressful game of office politics are those who have confidence issues and low self-esteem. You should work hard to increase your sense of self-worth by honing your talents and skills. Some people have a tendency to bully others when they sense that you are someone that they can just push around and manipulate. Conducting yourself in a confident manner and backing that confidence with competence can deter most bullying attempts.

Use your weaknesses to your advantage. As Tyrion Lannister, the most popular Game of Thrones character, puts it: Never forget what you are. The rest of the world will not. Wear it like an armor and it can never be used to hurt you. Sometimes, your difficulties and circumstances can give you an edge when playing the game. Doing this prevents your enemies from using it against you. Instead of lamenting that you graduated from an anonymous college while your competitors got a master’s degree in Harvard, advertise it and show them that even if you studied from a mediocre business school, your experience, attitude and willingness to learn more than makes up for that fact.

Be a team player and widen your network. Everyone always have their own agenda somewhere in their sleeve. They may not show it but when opportunities arise, they will grab it to further their own interests. Knowing this fact, some people make a mistake of assuming that everyone is so selfish that working with them is not possible. These people will typically keep to themselves and work in isolation, thinking that they can work their way to the top alone. You will need the help of other people somewhere along the way and isolating yourself will be counter-productive. Isolate yourself and you will fall easy prey to manipulators and bullies.

The strongest professional relationships (and sometimes friendships) are forged when people work with each other under pressure. Why? Because chances are, people will reveal their true nature and drop all pretenses when subjected to pressure. When you are a team player, you do not just help yourself and other people further your interests, you are also identifying genuine people from the pretenders.
