Chapter Fourteen

Kirkleigh at night was a curiously peaceful, comforting thing, even for someone as unfamiliar with it as Griff.

It was one of the family houses, so of course he knew it as well as any of the other estates he visited infrequently, but it had nothing on Millmond or Elmsley Abbey, where he and his siblings had spent most of their time together. Kirkleigh had recently become Hawk’s favorite, so he was there more often than not, but Griff had his own house in Worsley now, so he was rarely lingering at one of the Kirklin estates. His brother had often complained about that, never understanding why Griff was at a distance when in England.

He understood now, and the relationship between the brothers had never been better.

And oddly enough, being at Kirkleigh with his brother was rather perfect.

The amount of time they had spent here as boys, no doubt driving their uncle, the previous duke, to distraction at their rambunctiousness… The coastline they had explored, the caves they had discovered, the adventures they’d imagined… All of these things, Griff had then been able to add to his life as an operative, while his brother had been left with only the memories as he’d taken up the responsibilities of the dukedom.

He would have to come back to Kirkleigh in between missions and spend time with his brother without the pressure of assignments and see if they could recover some of that impishness from their youth; for Hawk’s sake, if nothing else. They’d been up for hours the first night Griff arrived here last week, catching up now that there were no secrets regarding Griff’s occupation and identity. It was astonishing how easy it was to confide in his brother, once he was free to do so, and how understanding his brother was about everything. He supposed he would need to privately thank Clara at some point for how her own work as an operative prepared that ground. Her exposure as a fraud had been a bitter sacrifice to his brother’s heart, as he had considered Clara a traitor and a thief rather than an operative at first. But deciding she was worth it, he had pursued her, and therein discovered the truth.

Rumor had it that Hawk had even been involved in some of the interrogations that had taken place at Kirkleigh once their prey had been captured in the trap set up at her coastline, but Griff had not been able to verify that with any reports. And his brother had been so full of questions that first night that Griff had not been able to ask.

He supposed they could have had just such an evening of revelations and questions tonight, but they’d spent a long enough time in company with Milliner and Clara and Minerva that they’d all retired after it ended.

Griff didn’t mind that so much. Tonight, he simply wished to wander the house and see the place as he once had. And he couldn’t sleep, thinking of the next phase of their mission.
