Chapter 9

The List

At lunchtime, Ben and Zeke sat alone in a corner of the eating area. Neither of them spoke. They both needed some quiet time where they didn’t have to cope with other people’s confusing ways. Ben opened his lunch case and scrunched his nose up in disgust. Cheese sandwiches! He always had peanut butter sandwiches for lunch. Always.

Except once before. That time they had run out of peanut butter at home. They must have run out again. He left his sandwiches in the case and took out the banana. Then he closed the case and put it away in his bag. It didn’t occur to him to give his sandwiches to Zeke.

But Zeke wasn’t hungry. He’d filled up on travel rations that morning… Deltar seed pods, his favourite.

At the end of lunchtime, Andy came over to chat to Ben and Zeke. All the other kids had gone to play sport or run around with their friends.

“I’m having a bad day,” said Ben.

“Me too,” said Zeke.

“That’s life,” said Andy. “Actually, I think it’s been a pretty good day. Those science experiments were fun and we still have sport this afternoon. I hope we play basketball. Then it’ll be a great day.”

“I wish I was home,” said Zeke.

“That’s right!” Ben exclaimed. “You said you needed help to get home. Remember, Andy, I told you about that this morning.”

“Yeah,” cried Andy, suddenly remembering too. “Tell us what we can do. I’m dying to know how we could possibly help an alien.”

“No-zzik. That would be too much. You need not die to help me,” said Zeke.

Andy laughed. “That’s something Ben would say.”

Zeke took a piece of paper from his pocket. “All I want are some things before I can leave your planet. I wrote them down in your words. I need these before I leave tomorrow.”

Ben took the paper and read:
