Rue’s swallow was audible. Casting his eyes down, he answered, “Congrats on the wedding.”

I had to call upon every ounce of training I had ever received to not crush this man’s skull between my palms. The threat against my wife was apparent, and I’d be damned if I’d let it stand.

Yanking my knife out of Donovan’s throat, I relished his blood spray across my face. The men looked at me in horror. “Who hired you?”

“I don’t know–”

I gripped Rue’s hair so hard that it ripped out of his scalp. “Don’t fuck with me!” I roared in his ear.

“I’m not. I s-s-s-swear,” he sobbed. Blood and snot poured from him in waves, making a disgusting sight. “Th-th-the man we dealt with never showed his face. He f-f-found us three months ago when we were leaving our favorite b-b-b-bar. A-after the first j-j-job, we didn’t hear from him until three n-n-nights ago. He was dressed in a suit and c-c-carried a briefcase f-f-filled with cash. He g-gave us a picture of your wedding and told us the j-j-job. Two m-m-million upfront and another two once it was d-d-done.”

“Idiots,” I spat.

A job like this didn’t go for four million dollars. Whoever hired them knew that it was a suicide mission. They were using these fools for bait, probably to see how our operations were working. Luckily, we checked to see if they were bugged before bringing them here.

“If we could get your wife, there was an additional five million, but it had to be done this week. It was a rush job because of some Christmas auction,” Gedeon added.
