10 A matter of scale

We might still think in dozens when we’re referring to eggs, but for most other things ten sets the scale. We talk about hundreds of people, thousands of dollars and millions of pounds. It’s the powers of 10 that separate one order of magnitude from the next, and that’s only natural given that, as we saw in Chapter 0, our number system is based on the number 10.

Scientists and calculators put this idea to good use. Because of the way our number system works, multiplying a whole number by 10 corresponds to appending a zero at the end of the number:

4 × 10 = 40.
