Back at home, everyone got ready for the big cattle drive. The cowboys rounded up 500 cattle, which they had to drive to San Francisco. They would be gone for at least two weeks, possibly longer, and every hand was needed. Jackson had hired a few more cowboys to help with the drive, since they also required cowboys at home.
The new cowboys were all hard workers, except one. His arrogance and conceit made it unbearable to be around him. Whenever Hazel came outside to help or prepare something for the cattle drive, he was there showing off. He took off his shirt, flaunted his muscles, and tried every possible way to impress her. He kept bragging about himself, and that made him even less attractive to the young woman. She avoided him whenever she could.
The day before the cattle drive, Hazel sat in front of the house with her saddle and fixed it up. She had barely sat on the front porch when Dwight once again approached her. He was not a bad-looking young man, but Hazel had never liked men in love with themselves. When he kept posing, she grabbed her things and went into the house. Dwight followed her.
She sat on the sofa in the living room, and he jumped over it and placed himself right next to her, putting his arm around her shoulders. She moved to the side, he followed. Hazel had enough.
âMr. Miller, our foreman, didnât hire you to be lazy. Everyone is working hard to be ready by tomorrow, and I would recommend you do the same.â
âI want to get to know you better before we leave tomorrow, Hazel. A pretty thing like you and a good-
looking guy like me makes a wonderful combination.â He tried again to put his arm around her shoulders, but she slapped his hand away.
âI am Miss Buchannon for you, and while I am at it, keep your hands away from me. I am not interested in you, so leave me alone,â she snapped and saw in his eyes that he was not accustomed to being rejected.
âYou are too good for me, huh? You think you are better than me because I am only a simple cowboy?â
âYou being a simple cowboy has nothing to do with this. I have a problem with your arrogant attitude. Now, if you donât want to lose your employment, I suggest you get to work.â
âYou are not my boss, Hazel Buchannon,â he responded aggressively. âThink before rejecting me because I can assure you, you donât want me as your enemy.â
âGET OUT,â she yelled.
âYou...,â he growled.
âMiller,â Alex said as he stood on top of the stairs. âMiss Buchannon asked you to leave and to stay away from her. If you donât stop threatening her, we will call the sheriff.â
Dwight scoffed, but got up, opened the door, and slammed it shut behind him.
âI donât think it is safe to have him around.â
âI agree,â Alex responded. âHe should not come with you tomorrow.â
âWho should not come with us?â George and Jackson stood in the door of Georgeâs office, looking confused.
