âSo, when do we get to meet the lucky woman?â Mom smiled so hard her eyes almost shut.
Zeke and I invited her to sit in the backyard after dinner. If I wanted anything serious with anyone I dated, she had to know first. Mom called it her way of looking out for my best interests. In her mind, my judgment no longer qualified as good enough.
So, her asking when sheâd meet Lyric only meant that itâd better be sooner than later. I made the mistake of introducing women to my family that my mother didnât vet first. None of them were fit for her son.
While I appreciated my motherâs opinion, if I enjoyed a womanâs company, I enforced my grown man status and continue seeing her. Mom silently waited for me to witness what she somehow read in the first few minutes of meeting anyone.
âLyric doesnât want to meet you yet. But soon.â
Momâs smile flattened. âAnd why not? What does she have to hide?â
Zeke chuckled as I did. âMom, youâre like the Queen or like the Michele Obama of the church.â
âIâll take the Michele compliment. Thank you kindly. Now what does that have to do with me meeting a woman whoâs dating my child?â
âYou can be intimidating. Really, all of you can. She is not sure sheâs ready for all of that,â I explained the best way I could.
âSo, youâre telling me this woman is scared of us?â She would not let up until she got what she wanted.
âMom, itâs not like she has a problem with you. She just has some reservations.â
âElijah, youâre not making any sort of sense. If sheâs scared, she has reason to be. Which only means she knows weâll see right through her. Thatâs a flag, son.â
âOr it means she thinks youâre going to judge her because you and Dad are church leaders.â
âTuh!â She crossed her arms over her chest. âNot buying it.â
âZeke, help me out here,â I pleaded. My brother knew first-hand what I was dealing with.
He wiped his mouth with his napkin. At least one of us could eat. âRemember how Savannah kept getting called in at the hospital whenever you were supposed to meet her?â
Mom pressed her lips together as she thought about it. âActually, yes, I do. I remember thinking she mustâve really been important to keep having to cancel.â
âShe was stalling.â
âThatâs not true. After all these years, youâre saying this now? Are you lying for your brotherâs girl to look better?â
The both of us laughed at her, pointing in his face. She had that look like the belt would come out next. âIâm telling the truth. Like Lijah said, you and Dad can be a bit intimidating to someone who doesnât know you.â
âPops is intimidating regardless,â I corrected him. Mom hit my shoulder as we chuckled at the truth. She married the man. She knew better than anybody.
âI will talk to her about it again. She fears you wonât like her. Being in our family gives off the notion that we arenât regular people.
