Chapter 30 - Chase

I walk through the door and set my briefcase down and hang my jacket up before moving into the kitchen and grabbing a beer out of the fridge. These long hours are starting to get to me, but I know all of this overtime I’m putting in will pay off soon.

I take a long pull from my bottle and peruse the refrigerator for something to eat. Ruby stocked it with lunch meat and cheese for me to make sandwiches when I need a quick bite. She also bought frozen meals for me to pop in the microwave. If I’m being honest though, I’m already missing her home cooking. There’s something about walking through the door and smelling the aroma of a fresh made meal after a long day at the office.

Ugh. I sound like an old married man. I can survive without Ruby’s homemade cooking for a week. I’ve been doing it for most of my adult life. I can last a damn week without it.

I decide on frozen spaghetti. I pop the container in the microwave and grab a plate. When the timer beeps, I go to put the food on a plate but then rethink that. Why dirty more dishes? With Ruby not here to help out, I am so over doing the dishes. Now, I really question how I survived before her. I grab a fork and dig into the noodles right from the container.

It’s good as far as frozen dinners go, but if Ruby was here, she would’ve made some garlic bread and strategically picked out a wine to go with it. We also would’ve talked while we ate, breaking up the monotony of my day. I pause, staring at the blob that they call spaghetti in front of me.

What the hell is going on here? Do I miss her? No, that can’t be it. Can it? I miss the idea of her. That’s what it is.

I decide all this quiet is messing with me, so I turn on the game to help shut down those thoughts.

“Should we order some dinner, Chase? It’s getting late and we’re making a lot of progress so I’d hate to stop for the night while we’re on a flow,” Ashley says, looking up from her laptop.

I stay quiet, debating whether to keep working or order something like Ashley suggested. It’s not like Ruby’s waiting for me at home. Another frozen dinner or takeout? That’s not a hard decision.

“Let’s order something. What are you feeling?” I ask.

“How about tacos?”

“I can always eat tacos,” I reply.

“Perfect! I’ll put an order in for delivery, that way we can keep working until it comes,” she suggests.

“Sounds good to me,” I say as I dive back into the documents on my computer.

Before I know it, Ashley is placing food on my desk along with some bottles of water. I close my laptop and make space on my desk for the rest of the food.

Ashley grabs her plate, sits on the couch on the far side of my office, and digs in.
