At least, that’s the story Amanda Pasternak gave me when I called her to find out if she could come past the diner before leaving the island, so that we could chat about financing and bond applications for Old Dan’s apartment.

“Ooh, yes. Well…, about that. I’m afraid I had the apartment details in the file I presented to Mr. Masters. He saw the place and absolutely wouldn’t take no for an answer, Lily.”

I went cold. “What are you saying? Noah bought the property?”

“Ye…es. Yes. I tried telling him that you had your eye on it first, but he was insistent. He paid over the asking price right then and there. There was no way you could have matched the offer.”

Pacing the small office studio I use as my apartment, I shook my head. “No, no. It’s not possible. Are you sure you told him I wanted to buy it? I mean, it makes total sense for me to own all three leases! Did he know that?”

Amanda cooed into the phone. “Calm down, Miss Holloway. Another one will come along. I’ll make sure you get it. Forget about Mr. Masters. He’s a ruthless businessman. You don’t know who you’re dealing with! I’m talking cut throat. He seemed to take great pleasure in cutting you out of the deal, that’s for sure. I wouldn’t be surprised if he isn’t here to plan some corporate takeover of the island.”

A vision of me tramping through the snow to reach my place of work from some other house stuck in my mind. “I don’t want another one. I wanted the top floor apartment in my building! Has the deal gone through yet? Is there any way I can outbid him?”

Amanda scoffs.
