Lilly felt her brows push together as he placed her on the bed. Why did she feel so dejected all of a sudden? He was doing this for her own good, right? She had been the one having doubts. Or maybe…he would simply go elsewhere and get what he seemed to need. Audrey’s face flashed in front of her eyes. Her stomach turned and she suddenly felt like she was going to throw up.

Oh God! Her stomach rolled a second time, and then sank at the memory of Audrey’s words. I’ll just have to make myself available to him.

“Gabe?” She closed her eyes, hearing the desperate tone in her voice and hating how weak it made her sound. She wasn’t sure what was going on. She wanted to be with him, to do the things he wanted, but he was right—she was scared and confused. She didn’t want Audrey to be right. She didn’t want Gabe to go to her. She placed her hand on her stomach. Why? Why did it bother her so much?

He sat on the bed facing her, his intense gaze not missing a thing. “Yes?”

Help me! she whispered in her head. She wanted to ask him why she was feeling this way, but the idea of him knowing her fears kept her from voicing them. Her head started to ache. She asked instead, “You came to me before you left.” She licked her dry lips. “You talked to me, didn’t you?”

He studied her, then nodded, his voice sounding harder than before. “I was wondering if you would remember.” Holding her gaze easily, he demanded, “What was the last thing I said to you?”

“That you would come to me,” she said breathlessly.

He gave her a brisk nod of satisfaction, and stood. His hand cupped her chin, and he raised her face. Gently, his thumb stroked her bottom lip, “Good night, angel.”
