He slipped out of the car and sheepishly accepted their warm handshakes and kisses on the cheek. But they said it was true: Tsehai had moved away and they didn’t know where. Fisseha let himself back into the taxi and gently closed the door. Desperate to stem the grief of the child I’d met the previous day, I whipped out paper and pen. “Let’s leave a letter here for his grandmother,” I cried to anybody who could understand me, “in case she comes back for a visit!” I wrote out in English block print—and then Selamneh translated it into Amharic—the news that my husband and I were in the process of adopting Fisseha, that we lived in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A., and here was our street address and our phone numbers, fax numbers, and e-mail addresses. (I might as well have written, “Second star to the right and straight on till morning.”) We added Selamneh’s mobile number on the bottom of the paper, and then I folded up a photograph of Fisseha inside it. “Please,” we said to the neighbors, “if you ever see her again, give her this letter. We want her to know what has become of her grandson.” We shook hands all around, and they bid us farewell, promising to take good care of the letter.

Sometime between six months from now and never is when we’ll hear from this woman, I thought. We dropped off the wedding cake at the orphanage.
