Face shellacked in recital makeup. Hair pinned in a bun. I sat in the back seat, riding home for a snack between matinee and evening shows. My mother slowed the car, annoyed, That dog is out of control. A white car crawled before us. A wide, not-human shape overwhelmed the heads in the back seat. Slowing more, my mother said, That’s not a dog. A deer rolled out the back windshield, landed in the road and stood. Red and pink insides hung from one side like garland. The deer staggered across a church lawn, a shrine to the Virgin Mary, to the trees. The white car pulled over. We did, too. My mother checked on the people, a family headed to Old Country Buffet for Mother’s Day lunch. Watching my mother leaned to the driver’s window, I worried the deer would come back and jump in our car next. The people shook in their seats, according to my mother, covered in glass pieces, tufts of fur, red flecks and smears.
