Chapter Seven

The squad stopped in the middle of what Candice supposed must be a meadow—because it certainly wasn’t a park—even though she’d never actually seen one. There was a sprinkling of trees here and there—too widely spaced, she would have thought, to have been planted.

And too wide apart to be considered a forest, she thought.

Only one of the men, Kodo, got out, rummaged around in the back for a few minutes and then walked around the side of the vehicle and smeared whatever it was on the doors.

Then he returned it to the back and got back in the front with Con—who was driving.

He moved forward so slowly from that point, Candice thought she could’ve walked faster.

Her curiosity deepened the further they went—because she could see the guys were looking for something.

Finally, after about an hour of just driving around, Con parked the vehicle and all of the men got out and stretched.

“Can I … Is it safe for me to get out?” she asked the closest standing to her, Griz, when she thought she couldn’t stand the suspense anymore.

Griz touched his lips in a shushing manner and a wave of cold washed over Candice.

Other than the bear that had tried to chase her down and eat her, they hadn’t encountered any threat since she’d joined them.

At least, not that she knew of.

But the signal to be quiet made her abruptly aware that all of the men looked tense.

Finally, a man stepped out from behind a tree in the distance.

“Condor Squad,” Con called out. “Of Night Raven.”

The man stared at them hard for several moments. “Who’s that with you?” he called out finally.

Con hesitated. “Our woman, Candy, and our daughter.”

A jolt of shock went through Candice.

Apparently it shocked the man, too. “That was some quick work,” he said dryly. “Where’s she from? The City?”

Again Con hesitated, this time a few seconds longer. “Yes.”

“And she ain’t got nobody in behind her?”

Con tensed. “We’ve been traveling for weeks and haven’t seen anybody. You got reason to think there’s someone out there looking for this place? Because if you do, we’ll just move on.”

The stranger seemed to mull over that for a while. Finally, he gestured for them to come. “Come on, then.”

Con glanced at his men. “I’m not liking the feel of this,” he murmured. “Could be nothing.”

“Could be something,” Panther said tightly.

They moved back to the vehicle. “Kodo—check it out. If you see anything that looks the least bit ‘off’, head back.”

Kodo nodded, dropped to his belly on the ground, and disappeared in a matter of moments in the thick, high weeds.

Con and the others made a pretense of checking the cargo and taking down a can of fuel and pouring it in the tank.

Finally, they got back in and started in the direction the man had disappeared—slowly.

Kodo met them when they reached the spot where the man had been standing. “I didn’t see any soldiers … but the camp is maybe half what it was the last time we were here.
