Chapter Seven

Nick

As we drive off the town square, I take note of how the town has changed. It’s been years since I’ve been back as well, and technically Sara and I are seeing things for the first time again together.

Part of me wants to avoid the park. The last thing she needs is to notice the town tree is missing tonight. Though, the closer we get to the open space, I see a new tree has taken its place. It’s massive, larger than the one I cut, and looks like it’s been there for years—despite the fact that it could’ve only been planted ten years go.

For a second, I wonder what happened the morning after the tree went missing. I was halfway to North Carolina by then. My only plan to live in my piece of shit car until a job came through.

“We used to come down this way a lot,” I say, pointing to the basketball courts on the corner. “There’s a—”

“Lakeside Park is over there,” Sara says with a smile. “It’s where we had our first kiss. Actually, where we had our first everything.”

I laugh and nudge her arm with my elbow. “Sorry your first time was in the backseat of a twenty-year-old Volvo. If I could’ve done better, I would’ve.”

I keep my eyes on the road, but there’s a smile in her tone. “God, do you remember how awful that was? I don’t think either of us finished, it was just a lot of parts moving and touching each other awkwardly.”

We both burst into laughter.

“Then that guy knocked on the window… Nick, what were we thinking?” She covers her face with her hand and shakes her head.

“I don’t know, it was eleven in the morning. Apparently, you just needed me that bad.” I nudge her again with a smile as I pull in front of the little blue trailer I grew up in.

“Has your mom gotten any better?” Sara asks.

I shake my head. “I’m not sure. I checked out of her life for the most part. Well, except for the money I send her every month.” I kill the engine. “There’s something about watching someone spiral into madness that’s exhausting. Anyway, I left something here I want to show you. I’ll just be a second. Do you mind waiting?”

She shakes her head. I want to invite her in, but I’m worried my mom will be out of her mind, and in Sara’s state, it’ll be too much.

“I’ll just be a second,” I say, stepping out of the car, locking it behind me. I check back multiple times as I knock on the front door of my mother’s trailer.

There’s little wait before the door slings open. A gaunt woman in a torn Metallica t-shirt opens the door—her hair a frayed mess of gray and blonde—a cigarette lit between her lips. I immediately want to turn back to the car, back to Sara, but there’s a box in my room I know Sara will appreciate if I can get to it.
