Chapter Sixteen

The following Monday morning, Lydia’s breakfast was interrupted by a knock at her front door. Answering it revealed the two youngest Schaeffer girls on her porch with an envelope in their hands and happy smiles on their faces. “This note is from Elizabeth,” Allison, the older sister, said, handing the envelope to Lydia.

“She sent us on a very important mission!” little Marta chimed in.

Lydia smiled. “Why, thank you! Would you girls like to come in and warm up?”

“Oh no, we cannot!” Marta’s eyes opened wide with self-importance.

“Our mission is not complete,” Alison jumped in. “We still need to visit Miss Danielle!” She waved a second envelope in the air as evidence.

“I see. Well let me, at least, give you each a cookie for the road then.” Lydia stepped quickly into the kitchen and returned with two gingerbread men, which the girls accepted with juvenile delight before bouncing away down the drive.

Lydia examined the contents of the envelope. It contained a floral-printed card with a simple message:
