My parents stopped by with breakfast after going out this morning. I’d have to get used to these drop-ins. This was the first time I lived near my mother in my own place.

Noelle let me sweat for three days before agreeing to a date. She was a pro at dodging me too. I worked from home and hadn’t seen her.

I didn’t stalk her. However, a couple of intentional run-ins came up short. Even on my runs, I hadn’t seen her. The only proof of her at home was her lights being on at night.

Mom begged for the details of my date with Noelle. I planned to start slow, as she requested. We had to become friends again. That was my only goal for now.

“Bowling?” Mom asked with her hand flying to her hip. “The girl finally said yes, and you’re taking her bowling? See, that dumb side is from Quincey.”

“Leave the man alone. He knows what he’s doing. If he’s taking her bowling, it must mean she asked to go.” Pops rested his hand on my shoulder. “He’s not stupid enough to take a woman he’s been crying over for half a decade to a bowling alley on their first date.”

“Come on, old heads! She doesn’t want anything romantic. We used to love bowling together, so that’s what we’re doing.”

“Call me old again.” Mom popped the side of my head. “I want this to work for you. We know how much you love Noelle. Trust me. So, we want to make sure you get her.”

I nodded. “Understood.”

“I can cook you two a nice dinner. Eating a meal together at home should be good, right?” She glanced at Pops for an answer.

“If that’s what he plans to do, honey. Let him lead this one. He can handle it.”

“Oh, you’re no help. What’s her favorite food?”

Without thinking, I blurted “Seafood.”

“It sure is. Oooh, she loves my gumbo. I remember she always used to come over with a container to take some home. Alic, you can make the snow crab. We can do the same thing we did when Jamie came home.”

“Sweetheart, you’re doing it again.”

“What?” Mom asked.

“Overstepping. Look at him. He’s waiting on you to stop only to tell you he doesn’t need the help.”

“No, he’s not.” Mom faced me. “Are you?”

“I mean, kinda. Ma, I appreciate you wanting to help, and cooking those things for Noelle isn’t a bad idea. We can do it some other time.”

Her eyes traveled to my dad, cursing him out without saying a word. I recognized that face. “Okay, okay. You’d better be on your best behavior. Noelle can be a hard-ass, but I would love for her to officially join the family. Don’t mess it up.”

“Yes, ma’am. I’ll do my best.”

“Love you, son. You got this.”

“Thanks, Pops. Love you too.”

“Let’s go, honey. We have some business to tend to.”

“What busin—” She turned to my father as he winked. “Ohhh! That business. Yes, let’s get to it.” She winked back.

“I’m standing right here, man. Come on.”

“Oh, boy, hush.
