Chapter Nine

The Dating Game

The next afternoon, the ride back home was peaceful. Laughter had been restored once she and Tyler talked at his penthouse, and it seemed as if they had never even had a slight disagreement. Inwardly Desiree was pleased to see that Tyler didn’t sulk like a little boy and give her the silent treatment in order to teach her a lesson for her hurting him. She hated the payback game that so many couples played. She also felt a small thrill inside at the way he had put her in her place and called her on her behavior. Desiree looked over at Tyler, and when he glanced at her she smiled at him, reached over, grabbed his hand, and gave it a small squeeze that he returned.

Once back at her apartment, Desiree helped Tyler carry her belongings upstairs. After they separated everything, and Desiree went downstairs to check her mail. She was surprised to see Tyler on the telephone when she returned. “Who are you calling?” she asked.

“No one. The telephone rang, but once I picked it up, no one said anything.”

“Oh,” she said, “it must be a wrong number. I hate when that happens. The person could at least say something.”

“You should get caller ID. I don’t even answer the telephone if someone calls and I know it’s a wrong number.”

“I’ll think about it. Because my number is unlisted, I never really felt the need before.” Changing the subject, she asked, “When are you going home for Christmas?” Every year the firm closed down a few days before Christmas until after New Year’s. Desiree knew Tyler usually went home every year to spend Christmas in West Virginia with his parents.

“Nancy called last week. Since I agreed to let Chad go skiing with his best friend and his family, she is going to keep Tiffany Christmas day, and I’m going to pick her up the next morning. We have an afternoon flight out of the Hartford airport.”

“I don’t like the idea of you spending all of Christmas Day alone,” she said.

“Well, it was easier to get a flight out on Saturday so it sort of worked out.”

“I won’t leave for my parents’ house until early Christmas morning. That way we can spend Christmas Eve together and wake up in each other’s arms on Christmas morning. Since I’m going to be there for a few days I’m sure they will understand.”

Tyler made no comment, but by the smile that spread across his face, he obviously appreciated her actions. “Are you ready for the Christmas party on Wednesday?” he asked.

Buchanan & Buchanan Law Firm had an annual Christmas party at the firm the last evening before it closed for the holidays. Attendance was not mandatory, but it was noticed if the employee wasn’t there.

“Pretty much. It’s always amusing to see some of the stiff-necked lawyers get tipsy. That’s why the party is always held the last day of work before the holidays, so people can sleep it off the next day if they’ve had too much to drink.
