Chapter Twenty-One

The two young dragons reached their room without incident. If Tanya was at risk of being thrown out because she had been captured in such a historically embarrassing way, they were lucky as no one saw their flight. Even Ruby Firedrake—whose room they snuck past easily given that the older girl sang softly to herself about turning the heat up—remained oblivious.

Once in their room, Tanya closed the door and put her back to it, slid to the floor, and landed on her butt. “Ky! I can’t believe you did that for me.”

“Stood up to Midnight? No problem.”

“Seriously, Ky, I appreciate it. I…I mean, Karl was right. I should never have been trapped like that in the first place. It was very stupid of me.”

“No, Tanya. Almost anyone can be overcome when facing three dragons. Those numbers even gave the Steel Dragon some trouble. Plus, they fought dirty. Why did they have those ropes to tether you? That’s creepy and unexpected. It’s no surprise that they trapped you. They would have done so to anyone.”

“You’re sweet to say so, Ky, truly, but I should have known when I went over to them. I was so stupid. I could see it was darker under that tree than it should have been, but what did I do? Did I show caution? No, I walked right in! It’s exactly like my dad always says.” She shook her head and hid her face behind her hands. When she removed them again, there were smudges near her eyes where she had messed her makeup.

“Why did you walk over to them?” Kylara asked. She didn’t mean to sound rude but she couldn’t help herself. Karl Midnight was such a piece of crap, she couldn’t understand why Tanya would have even considered talking to him.

“Because Esme said she could teach me how to make my claws poison.” She somehow slumped even lower.

“And you believed her?”

“I know it was stupid.” Tanya moaned with humiliation and embarrassment. “But…well, I’m desperate! The mage classes have not helped and everyone knows it. And I thought that if I could learn a power—any power—maybe people would start to treat me better.”

“Yeah, but poison claws?” Kylara wrinkled her nose at the thought. “All that can do is cause dragons extra pain. That’s not the kind of power I would want.”

“Well, that’s easy for you to say,” her roommate protested. “You have diamond scales and light powers. Why didn’t you tell me that? It’s incredible!”

“It’s no big deal,” she said. “I wanted to help you.”

“No big deal? No big deal? Are you crazy? How could you even keep something like that a secret? If I had that power, I’d use it all the time. Can you make your hands glow like you told me that dreamboat Samuel did so he could heal you or is it only the blinding flash? Both are cool, of course!”

“Okay, for starters, Sam is not a dreamboat.”

“Ky, I don’t need to be able to read your aura to tell you that you’re lying to yourself about him.
