The Paris Catacombs

“Second Unit, do you read?” Luka said over his intraear. He and Oleg were still inside the maze off the storage room.

Yes, Three.

It was Reva. Her texted answer reached his ocular display with a speed nearly equaling that of human speech.

“We’re in the tunnels,” Luka said. “They run off in all directions from a chamber behind the hall.”

So we’d already surmised.

“About the hall. I specifically said the chamber. It’s the real hub. The junction of many passages, some running north. And it isn’t on our map.”

We’ve geolocated the target. Can you see her coordinates?

Luka noted with displeasure that she had changed the subject.

“Yes,” he said. “She’s close.”

So are we. Very.

He could see that as well. His display showed that she and Zoltan were now only a few hundred yards to his southeast.

“We can’t stay here any longer,” he said. “The chamber’s flooding. The passages. All of it.”

If the chamber is what you say it is, it’s exactly where she’s headed.

Luka glanced at Oleg. Water was trickling down the walls around them.

“Are you understanding me, Two? I told you we have to vacate.”

And I told you we’re a hop away. Hold your position.

“There are less dangerous ones. The main corridor leading into the hall is on the map. It wasn’t taking much water. At least not a short while ago. We can outflank her outside the archway.”

A half second’s pause.

Implants, water... what else does the Black Hundred shrink away from?

“Be careful of your words. We don’t have to tolerate insults. Or obey your orders. None of us are under the Directorate’s command any longer.”

I won’t dispute your last assertion. In fact it makes my point. We’re being well paid for this operation.

“We can’t collect on the money if we’re dead.”

Listen to me, Tret’ya. That main passage is too exposed. We lose part of our advantage if we move on the target there.

“Better than drowning here. If you’re coming, then hurry. But we’re leaving these tunnels right now. Out.”

With that, Luka unlinked and stood looking at Oleg in silence. Water was flowing down the walls and across the floor to slurp at the outer bottoms of their boots.

“She’s lost her mind,” he said. “I don’t like it.”

Oleg grunted. Then he gestured toward the opening to the hall.

“Fuck it,” he said. “Let’s get out of here.”
