The last thing Neil expected to see on the porch today was Nora. When he looked up from sawing the replacement boards for the crumbling front porch, he had to blink hard to make sure she was really there.
âDo not tell Frank, but this is the best brisket taco I think I have ever had.â Nora wiped at a drop of sauce from the corner of her mouth. âI mean, if Iâd known this was the kind of food served on film sets, I might have set my sights on Hollywood instead of nursing school.â
Valerie chuckled loudly. âYou and a few hundred other waiters in Southern California would have had the same idea.â
âI suppose.â She took another bite and stuck her tongue out to lick her lips before slowly chewing.
âWait till you taste the chocolate chip cookies.â Valerie shoved a wrapped cookie across the resin picnic table. âNow these are to die for.â
âIâm partial to the pecan shortbread cookie,â Neil said. This truck the production company provided was a far cry from the construction site trucks he was used to.
âI think Iâll have another.â Nora set her hands flat on the table to push to her feet. âOr maybe Iâll take another look at that menu.â
âI think Iâll join you.â Neil stood and walked the twenty feet to where the truck was parked to the side of several tables set out for the crew to eat at. Unlike normal lunchtime trucks, this one was parked all day and Molly the truck owner kept it running non stop from late morning till shooting shut down, whatever time that might be. The line was several people deep. If this truck were in a big city, the lines would be never ending.
âWhat can I get you folks?â Molly was a petite thing, who despite working in a very hot confined area, without help, smiled brightly.
After perusing the menu while waiting, Nora stepped forward. âThe fried mac and cheese is seriously tempting, but I canât resist trying the Philly cheesesteak.â
âA girl after my own heart. With or without peppers?â
âWith please.â Nora turned to re-examine the handwritten chalkboard menu. âWhen you say fresh lemonade, do you meanââ
âSqueeze it right here in the truck.â Now the woman was truly beaming.
Noraâs smile broadened to match the cookâs. âIâll take a lemonade too please.â
âMake that two, and Iâll have the fried mac and cheese.â Neil had come to like a lot of things about Nora in the last weeks but that extra twinkle in her eyes when something caught her fancy or interest was probably the most enjoyable after her smile. âIf you like, we could share?â
A smile pulled at her cheeks before she bit it back and shrugged, her eyes still sparkling. âMaybe a taste would be nice.â
Settling in at the table again, Neil stabbed at the food with his fork and dangled it in front of Nora. âFirst bite.â
Those eyes sparkled again and she gladly consumed the morsel and then, eyes closing, moaned. âOh, better than the state fair.
