PREPARATION

Onion skins are very easy to work with. All you need to do is place them in the dye pot, cover with water and add heat. There is no need to change them in any way. When collecting enough skins to dye with, make sure you use the dry outer layer, the inside layers can develop mould and get stinky if left as they are. Store them in a brown paper bag out of direct sunlight.

MAKING A DYE BATH

1. Add your skins to the dye pot and cover with water.

2. Place on the stove and bring to a simmer.

3. Simmer gently for 30–45 minutes. Once the colour of the water has changed and deepened in strength, the dye is extracted. This can take anywhere from 30 minutes–1 hour.

4. Take off the heat and leave to cool completely, then use a sieve to strain out the skins.

5. Your dye is now ready to be used.
