Chapter 14: Jane’s Wedding

Elizabeth had intended during the remainder of Friday and the next two days before the wedding to do all she could to avoid being alone with Darcy, but it turned out that her plans were all in vain. He surprised her on Friday and Saturday by obviously doing all he could to ensure not only was he not alone with her, but that when they were together in a group, he never stood or sat beside her. His avoidance of her company was noticed by all.

On Saturday night, when Jane came into Elizabeth’s room for their nightly session before retiring, she asked Elizabeth, “May I assume that all is not well between you and Mr. Darcy? He has certainly been avoiding being with you.”

“It is not. I made it clear that I did not want him to call on me.” And then she told Jane about the argument she had with Darcy about going to Pemberley. “So, you see, Jane, he is always determined to get what he wants, and I am determined to go my own way. It is becoming more and more clear that we would not be a compatible couple.”

Jane took Elizabeth’s hand and looked at her a long time without speaking, but finally said, shaking her head and smiling, “Methinks the lady doth protest too much.”

Elizabeth pulled her hand away from Jane. “How can you say that? We are constantly having disagreements. I think he is finally beginning the realize that I am completely unsuitable and thus is doing all he can to get over whatever feelings he had for me.”

Jane took Elizabeth’s hand again. “Lizzie, you are the pot calling the kettle black. I have never seen you so act so distressed and passionate about your relationship with someone. It is you who are doing all you can to get over the feelings you have for him because you believe you are unsuitable, despite what everyone else tells you. And I believe he is acting as he is to show you how much you will miss your contacts with him.”

Elizabeth looked at Jane and then down at her hand in Jane’s and suddenly she could not stop the tears from falling. When Jane moved closer and put her arms around Elizabeth, Elizabeth said, “I do not know what to do, Jane. When I am around him, all I want is to be with him, but when I am away from him, I think of all the things that are wrong with us as a couple. I love debating with him or just going on a walk with him, but I keep remembering how differently we were raised and how little I know about being a woman of the ton. I fear it is a life I could not tolerate. And I truly do love what I am doing now at the store, which I cannot do if I marry him. I think I can have a satisfactory life just continuing the way
