Chapter Eight: Dealing with a Narcissist
Sometimes we have narcissists in our lives that we can walk away from very easily. Sometimes it can be difficult or almost impossible to walk away. Sometimes the narcissist in our lives is a coworker or a family member. Sometimes they are our parents.
While you may not always be able to walk away from every narcissist in your life, you can learn how to deal with a narcissist to bring peace back into your life.
Not all narcissists are abusive. However, if you are in an abusive relationship with a narcissist, these techniques may not work. Instead of trying to deal with the narcissist, you need to start trying to focus on what it is that makes you stay. Why do you continue to subject yourself to the abuse at the hands of the narcissist? It does not matter if it is mental, emotional, or physical, abuse of any kind is abuse, and you do not have to accept being treated that way. Please alert the authorities to what is going on and seek professional help so that you can deal with the damage that has been done. Remember, the abuse that the narcissist has inflicted upon you is not your fault. They are responsible for their actions, and nothing that you could do or say would make it okay for anyone to abuse you.
Before we get into learning how to deal with a narcissist, we have to first start by talking about denial. We can all spot denial when we see it. We see people all the time living in denial, not wanting to face the truth. A narcissist will be in denial about being a narcissist. How far in denial they are at the time will affect how well the techniques that we are going to talk about work. If the narcissist is deep in denial, these techniques may not work as well as they would if there was only a bit of denial.
How can you determine this?
Can the narcissist admit that there is a problem? Something as simple as admitting that their life is not what they expected it to be can provide you with some hope. Many people do not believe that a narcissist can admit that there is a problem, but the truth is that many of them have sought out therapy of some sort to help them understand what is going on. These are vulnerable narcissists, and you can learn how to deal with them.
When you are dealing with a narcissist, you have to be aware of the manipulation. We already know that narcissists are great manipulators, which means that they can convince you that they are changing, that they are interested in changing, or that they know there is a problem⦠but only if they think that they are going to benefit from doing so. Of course, not all narcissists will take things this far. However, those that are willing to are very dangerous because they can make you believe that they are willing to change and go through all of the motions, completely deceiving you.
