Although several studies have indeed found this discordant relationship between explicit and implicit self-esteem, research findings have been somewhat inconsistent. The research doesn’t really tell us that narcissists have low self-esteem on the inside and high self-esteem on the outside. Instead, conclusions suggest that something else, such as early childhood experiences, may be going on that explains the different presentations of narcissism. More research is needed in this area.
