Big-eyed

The Lord has big eyes, “the better to see you with.” Don’t you have an expression, “You can’t get away with it”? Millions of good, educated people think yes, you can sometimes get away with it. But the truth is that those big, beautiful eyes are always looking everywhere.

At midnight, for example, when everyone is asleep, we ask ourselves, “Who will know if we slip into the kitchen? Who will see if we climb up to the top shelf where that special jar is hiding and steal into those special chocolate chip cookies?” We take one small handful, and nobody is the wiser. “After all,” we say, “what they don’t know can’t hurt.”
