Ganesh Chaturthi (September): Festival celebrating the god Ganesha, particularly important among Maharastrians.

Navaratri, Durga Puja (September/October): Festival for the Goddess. Navaratri or ‘nine nights’ of folk dancing to worship Ambamata: celebrated by Gujaratis in India and abroad. Important in Bengal where elaborate images of Durga are created for the Goddess’s worship.

Dashera, Dussehra (September/October): The ‘tenth’, the night following Navaratri when Rama’s victory over Ravana is celebrated. In parts of north India, plays (Ram-lila) are performed which recount the story from the Ramayana.
