Nameless

When Nameless came awake he scented Lupercalia were still nearby, like they had been when he roused in the small freighter. What he didn’t scent was Harper’s sweet smell.

“You stun me again, and I will tear your arms from your body,” Nameless growled at the male standing a foot away, as he opened his eyes.

“Don’t push your luck. Blaidd said not to harm you, if you didn’t put up a fight. But I get to make that determination,” the male at the entrance of the small room warned. “You’re lucky he’s having food sent down for you and your friends. You are to eat and get lost. The Primitus doesn’t want to see your face in Setmar after today.” The male them slammed the door, locking them in.

Shit. You’ve got to be kidding me. Blaidd is the Lupercalia Primitus. The realization unnerved him. Blaidd was apparently so damn arrogant for a reason. No wonder he commanded all the Lupercalia in the Hold without question. Blaidd was one of a few Lupercalia sovereigns in the Torvus empire, an alpha among alphas. Just my fate.

Nameless looked around the barren room. Zaftan sat against the far wall looking pissed, while Galen still slept nearby. At least the Lupercalia hijackers had only used stunners, rather than something more permanent.

Harper was nowhere to be seen. That bastard has her.

How in the fates am I going to get her back? He’d be willing to take on the entire population of Lupercalia, to get Harper away from Blaidd. Except he’d probably die in the process, and where would that leave her. There’s gotta be a way out of this.

Nameless wasn’t unfamiliar with the Lupercalia. In his youth, he’d been able to escape the asylum for days at a time. He occasionally ran with some of the Lupercalia his age, that lived in the neighborhood. Nameless spent enough time with them, to pick up a thing or two. They weren’t a bad lot, unless you riled their pack mentality. The Lupercalia held to a strict, orderly structure, and a system of codes.

“Mongrel,” Nameless barked out, knowing the guard could hear him through the door. “You tell the Primitus I’m challenging him for the Pearl.” To openly challenge an alpha was a serious matter, and wouldn’t be ignored. If this went as planned Nameless would only have one male to contend with. The Lupercalia guard eyed Nameless through the portal in the door, trying to gauge if he was serious or not. Nameless narrowed his gaze intimidatingly at the male. “It’s not up to you to decide beta. The challenge has been leveled,” Nameless snarled.

“Fool.” The male shook his head but he took off to relay the message.

“Blaidd’s the Primitus.” Zaftan shook his head. It was quite a turn of events. “And we’re in Setmar.”

“Smells about right.” Galen grimaced.

The filtered air inside wasn’t entirely free of the stench of pollution, which plagued the city. Nameless knew the smell. He’d grown up in Yawm, a similar mining town, two rotations south of the Imperial City.
