Rama, embodiment of cultural perfection, kills the ten-headed Rakshasa king Ravana, who personifies the law of the jungle. Rama’s bow is the symbol of poise and balance. Rama always obeyed his parents; Ravana did not. Rama gave up his kingdom for his brother; Ravana usurped Lanka from his brother Kubera, the king of Yakshas. Rama was always faithful to his wife, Sita, while Ravana had many wives in his harem and he raped many more women. Rama ruled for his people; Ravana ruled for himself. Rama represents the perfect man and his kingdom, Rama Rajya, represents the perfect society. Ramayana, the epic dealing with his life, is therefore read in Hindu households.

Culture can exist only when nature is domesticated. This is often a violent act. The forest needs to be fenced and burned down to create the field. Society will decide what seed will be sown, what is crop and what is weed, what is good and what is bad. The following story describes how the Pandavas establish their great city by destroying a great forest, home to many birds and beasts. Without this sacrifice the city cannot be created.
